Granted, this was a no-win situation that the authorities were in, but I would venture a guess that the amount of manpower needed to move and secure these animals in the limited sedation time limit was out of control.  Keep in mind, every second that a few officers are tied up dealing with a sedated grizzly bear (I mean, you can’t just tranq it and leave it there) is time that a friggin’ Bengal tiger is running around.  It’s just a horribly sad situation all around, but I get why they did what they did. Also: they did try tranquilizers and it didn’t work (source: msnbc), probably because rural Ohio isn’t equipped to deal with 18 angry and confused tigers on the loose.  My home town would have totally shit the bed if this happened.  What happened is terrible, but I don’t know if there were any other options.   BTW, there’s also a monkey with Hepatitis on the loose, which… ugh.  Everything about this is miserable. This story needs less snark on Ohio police and more on Ohio’s awful exotic animal regulations… or lack thereof. Horrific. And I agree, Ohio police didn’t really have a choice. Sad situation indeed.
